Global consumer demand for energy-efficient lighting systems continues to increase. This demand is driving the popularity of indoor and outdoor LED lighting.

Traditional outdoor lighting systems are seen as outdated, inefficient and expensive, so people are turning to LED floodlights. These are fast becoming everyone’s choice in outdoor lighting for a variety of reasons. If you are a lighting supplier or wholesaler, building contractor, electrician or homeowner, don’t miss out on getting the highest quality LED floodlights that meet your customers’ needs.

But with so many LED floodlights on the market, how do you know which ones to buy? Check out our LED floodlight guide to buy the best for your or your client’s outdoor lighting.

definition

Base – The base of the floodlight refers to the type of mounting fixture. For example, some mounting options, such as trunnion mounts, allow floodlights to be cast from side to side. Other mounting options, such as the Slip Fitter Mount, include mounting the light on a pole.

Color Temperature (Kelvin) – Kevin or color temperature basically corresponds to the color of the projected light, which is also related to heat. LED floodlights generally come in two different measurements: 3000K to 6500K.

DLC Listed – DLC stands for Design Light Consortium and certifies that the product can operate at high energy efficiency levels.

Dusk to Dawn Lights – A dusk to dawn light is any light that turns on automatically after the sun begins to set. Some LED floodlights can be fitted with light sensors for use as a dusk-to-dawn light. If you wish to use this feature, be sure to check the product description and spec sheet to ensure your floodlights are compatible with photocells.

Lenses – The type of lens used by the lighting fixture will affect how the light is dissipated. Two common types are clear glass or frosted glass.

Lumens – Lumens measure the total amount of light emitted per unit of time. This unit mainly measures the brightness of light.

Motion Sensors – Motion sensors in outdoor lighting equipment detect when there is motion close to the light and turn it on automatically. This is ideal for security lighting purposes.

Photocells – Photocells use sensors to detect the level of lighting available outside and turn on when necessary. In other words, once it gets dark, the lights will come on. Some LED floodlights are photocell compatible and can be used as “dusk to dawn lights”.

Shorting Cap – The shorting cap contains the shorting connection between the line and the receptacle load to keep the light on at all times when power is supplied.

Voltage – Voltage refers to the amount of work required to move a test charge between two points per unit of charge. For LED lighting, this is the amount of power the lighting device provides to the bulb.

Wattage – Wattage refers to the power projected by a lamp. Generally speaking, higher wattage lamps will project more lumens (brightness). LED floodlights are available in a wide range of power. This ranges from 15 watts all the way up to 400 watts.

1. Why choose LED floodlights?
Since their invention in the 1960s, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have replaced traditional lighting around the world for decades. Let’s see why.

2. Efficiency
The best thing about LED floodlights is that they are 90% more efficient than regular incandescent floodlights! This means you and your customers will save a lot on their electricity bills.

3. Save money
The average household saves about $9 per month, so imagine how much a football field or parking lot company would save by switching to LED floodlights! There are also commercial energy-efficient lighting rebates and tax credits available for choosing eco-friendly lighting.

4. Failsafe
They can last for many years without burning out or failing. Instead, they experience lumen depreciation, which means they slowly lose their powerful glow. They have unique heat sinks that act as very effective thermal management to avoid overheating.

5. Best Outdoor Lighting
LED floodlights are designed to have a directional but very wide beam to illuminate large areas in the most efficient way. LEDs can come in a variety of colors – including red, green, blue and most commonly warm or cool white – to provide the best ambience for the area you light.

6. Choose wattage and lumens
Depending on the application of the LED floodlight, knowing which wattage and how many lumens to choose can be confusing. Of course, the larger the area you need to illuminate, the larger the light will need to be. But how much bigger?

Wattage is the amount of power projected by an LED floodlight. This can vary from 15 watts to 400 watts, with lumens consistent with wattage. Lumens measure the brightness of light.

LEDs have lower wattage compared to high-intensity discharge lamps (HIDs) traditionally used in floodlights. For example, a 100-watt LED floodlight for parking lot and road lighting has the same power output as a 300-watt HID equivalent. 3 times more efficient!

Some well-known tips for LED floodlights are choosing the ideal size of light based on its end position and careful consideration of where it will be installed. For example, 15w LED floodlights with 1,663 lumens (lm) are typically required for small sidewalks, and 400w LED floodlights with 50,200 lm are required for airports.

7. Motion Sensor
If you don’t need 24/7 LED floodlights, a motion sensor is a great option to save on your energy bills. The lights only come on when it senses the movement of a person, vehicle or animal.

This is a useful application for residential use such as backyard, garage and security lighting. Commercial applications include parking lots, perimeter security lighting and highways. However, this feature can increase the price of LED floodlights by around 30%.

8. Safety Certification and Warranty
Safety is the number one consideration when choosing any lighting fixture, especially if you’re resale to customers. If they buy LED floodlights from you and have safety issues, you’ll be their first choice when it comes to complaints or refunds.

Ensure maximum customer satisfaction, quality and safety by purchasing a UL safety certified LED floodlight with DLC certification. These independent agencies conduct rigorous third-party testing of lighting systems to determine their safety, quality and energy efficiency.

While LED lighting is known for its durability and longevity, some cheap or low-quality brands may not last. Always choose a manufacturer of LED floodlights that offers a minimum 2 year warranty. All OSTOOM’s LED floodlights are CE and DLC, RoHS, ErP, UL certified and come with a 5-year warranty.

10. How many lumens do I need?
It depends on the space you wish to illuminate. Small areas such as outdoor walkways and doorways will require approximately 1,500–4,000 lm. Small yards, store front yards and driveways will require approximately 6,000–11,000 lm. Larger areas require 13,000–40,500 lm for roads and car parks. Industrial areas like factories, supermarkets, airports and highways require around 50,000+ lm.
